First aid is the initial help that is given following injury or illness. Understanding what you can do when faced with an emergency situation can help to prevent or reduce suffering, help stabilise the patient, keep you and your horse safe and promote recovery.
Distressed and injured horses can be unpredictable, this will equip you with the confidence and skills to take charge of equine emergency situations you may be faced with, while ensuring the safety of everyone involved.
- Prioritise and know how to deal with emergencies; discriminating between those that are life-threatening, urgent or non-urgent
- Undertake a clinical examination of your horse including taking a temperature, pulse and breathing rates and assessment of hydration
- Assess, examine and bandage a wound
- Put together an equine first aid kit
